On Rei Kawakubo
'The Power Of Clothing'

typography class, sixth semester: development of an E-Pub for iPads.

„Everything that enters one of Kawakubo‘s environments begins as a simple thing – a dress, a shoe, a bottle, a magazine-but ends up something elusive and shifty, always on the brink of becoming something else. Kawakubo has put an end to parallel play: no human form or dress pattern is so utterly independent yet mutually transformative as woman in a Kawakubo garment, no object so redefined as a plastic bag in the Dover Market and no scent of asphalt so unrecognizable as when embedded in a Comme des Garçons perfume. She has made improbable enemies exchange fluids: art and commerce, fast and slow, the ubiquitous and the distinct. She could never have been just a maker of clothes because the clothes need a partner, or multiple partners to play with and through whom to avoid boredom and sameness, the more diverse the better. And as sometimes happens with the exchange of fluids, particularly between unlike partners, unexpected forms can be the result, emergent forms can begin to unfold, and a quest for the perpetually elusive and therefore potentially new can begin.“
